Can I take Protein shakes when on a Keto-diet?

Ketogenic dieting or keto dieting is a type of diet where the individual decides to take meals that contain low carbohydrate, adequate protein and high-fat. It was majorly used for the treatment of children suffering from a type of epilepsy that is difficult to control. People who take this diet force their body to work with fats as opposed to carbohydrates that is what the body burns majorly for energy. Under normal circumstances, the body converts carbohydrates to glucose that is subsequently transported all through the body for energy as well as for fueling the functioning of the brain. However, when there is only a little amount of carbohydrate in the body, fats in the body are converted to ketone bodies and fatty acids. Ketone bodies replace glucose and provide energy for the body. In recent times, individuals that want to lose weight or maintain their weight have discovered that the use of ketone diets can also help their course. Since they know that Ketone diets encourage the burning of fat, which is what leads to weight gain, they opt to start a keto dieting towards losing fat and subsequently losing weight.

For those that are into bodybuilding, ketone dieting has also been encouraged. Through ketone-dieting, they can lose fat and gain more lean muscle which is the aim of most bodybuilding activities. However, you might be wondering as an individual or bodybuilder, if it is wise to continue to take your Protein shakes when you are on a keto diet.

The answer to this question lies directly on the type of protein shakes that you are taking that you want to be taking. There are different brands and types of protein shake with the different constituent of nutrients. When you are on a keto diet, you are supposed to take a very low quantity of protein, mostly from 25 to 50 grams of carbohydrates per day and no more. Thus, all you need to do is check the ingredients that were used to make the protein shakes that you are taking and the nutrient composition.

If you observe that for the quantity of protein shakes that you will need to take per day, there is a significant quantity of carbohydrates that will make you exceed the normal quantity of protein that you are supposed to be taking, then you should opt for an alternative that has lower carbohydrate content and higher protein content. This way, you will not have to breach the number of carbohydrates you are supposed to take per day because of the protein shakes that you are taking.

When you consume more than the necessary carbohydrates you are supposed to take per day, even if it is due to the consumption of protein shakes, it would make your keto-dieting counter-productive. This is because it could make the body to begin to burn the carbohydrates and ignore the fatty tissues you would want the body to burn. You would subsequently not lose fat the way you would have if you had stuck to the right formula of consuming less a maximum of 50 grams of carbohydrates per day.
